# Competitors

> Follow the gyms your members compare you with - their prices next to yours, their Google ratings, what changes on their websites - and read where everyone sits on the price and rating value map.

**Competitors** keeps a list of the gyms your members compare you with and lines them up against your own gyms: their prices next to yours, their Google rating and reviews, and every change 1club finds on their websites. Owners and managers use it to price with the market in view instead of by guesswork.

## When to use it

Members rarely judge your price on its own. They judge it against the gym down the road and against what your reviews say you are worth. Competitors puts both in one place.

Typical uses:

* **Check your price before you change it** - a padel gym planning to raise its court hour sees on the value map that it sits below the fair price line with a better rating than most of the market, so the increase has room.
* **Spot the rival that undercuts you** - a CrossFit gym gets the Monday email saying a nearby box dropped its monthly membership, and plans a response before members start asking.
* **Find out what reviewers love about a rival** - a Pilates studio opens a competitor and reads what its reviewers praise and complain about, then fixes the same complaint in its own studio first.

## Add competitors

In the admin, go to **Marketing** > **Competitors**. Click **Add competitor** and fill in:

* **Search Google for the club** - Pick the gym from Google to bring in its name, website, and Google rating in one step.
* **Name** - How the competitor shows on your list.
* **Website** - The gym's own website, not a social profile. 1club reads it to find prices, offers, and services.
* **Rival of** - Which of your gyms it competes with, or all of them.
* **Notes** - Anything your team should know about it.

If you have run an [AI business report](https://docs.1club.ai/home/ai-visibility-report.md), **Import from AI report** adds the nearby gyms it found in one click. Your list holds up to 10 competitors.

## How prices are compared

1club reads each competitor's website when you add it (it takes about a minute) and again every week. It sorts what it finds into comparable prices, each turned into one unit:

* **Membership** - per month, grouped by term (monthly, 3 to 9 months, annual).
* **Pass** and **Drop-in** - per visit.
* **Area** - per hour, for each sport (a padel court, a tennis court).
* **Private session** - per session.

For each of these, 1club takes each gym's cheapest regular price and works out the **market median** across every gym that lists one. A price needs at least two gyms to be compared. A regular price always wins over a concession price (child, student, senior, family, group), which is compared only when it is the only one a gym lists.

A gym's **Price level** is how far its prices sit from the market median overall, for example "12% below the market". It is the middle of its differences across every price it shares with the market, so one unusual price cannot swing it.

## Read the value map

The value map places each gym by two things at once:

* **Across** - its Google rating. Further right is better rated.
* **Up** - its price level. Higher is more expensive than the market, and the 0 line is the market median.

The bigger the bubble, the more Google reviews stand behind the rating. Your own gyms are drawn in your brand color. A gym with no comparable prices or no Google rating has no place on the map, but the list still shows it.

### The fair price line

The dashed **Fair price** line runs through the middle of the market, rising as steeply as the gyms on the map charge more for a better rating. 1club takes the slope between every two gyms and uses the middle one, so a single unusual gym cannot tilt it. On the line, a gym charges what its rating earns in this market. Where better-rated gyms are not more expensive, the line is flat at the market median.

* **Below the line**, a gym gives more than it charges for. Members get a good deal, and the gym may have room to raise its prices.
* **Above the line**, a gym charges ahead of its rating. Members may start to compare it with cheaper or better-rated gyms nearby.

The further a gym is from the line, the stronger the signal. No corner of the map is "the best": what matters is where you sit against the line.

### The four corners

The median rating and the market price split the map into four corners:

| Corner | Price | Rating | What it usually means |
| - | - | - | - |
| **Premium** | Above the market | Above the median | A fair position for a gym that earns its price. Keep the experience at the level the price promises. |
| **Best value** | Below the market | Above the median | Members get more than they pay for. The usual place to look for room to raise prices. |
| **Budget** | Below the market | Below the median | A fair position for a gym that competes on price. |
| **Overpriced** | Above the market | Below the median | The price is ahead of the rating. Improve the experience and your reviews, or review the price. |

This way of reading price against quality is the same one hotels use to compare their room rates with their review scores against nearby hotels.

## The competitor list

Below or beside the map, the list shows your gyms and every competitor:

* **Club** - The gym, with **You** on your own.
* **Rank** - Its place among all of them by Google rating.
* **Google rating** - The rating and the number of reviews behind it.
* **Price level** - Its prices against the market median.
* **One column per compared price** - The gym's price, with its difference from the median. Hover a price to see what it was read from and on which page.
* **Website** - The competitor's website.
* **Website watch** - How many changes the last weekly reading found, or when it last checked.

Click a gym to open it. A competitor shows its prices side by side with yours, a head to head on rating, reviews and rank, what its Google reviewers love and complain about, how you compare with what to do next, and the full history of changes on its website.

## Weekly email

Click **Email me weekly** and switch on each of your gyms you want an email for. Every Monday you get one email per gym with the price changes at its competitors, where your prices stand, and their Google ratings.

## Use it from an AI assistant or the API

Everything on this page is also available to AI assistants through the [1club MCP server](https://docs.1club.ai/mcp/tools.md) and to your own integrations through the [Platform API](https://docs.1club.ai/api-reference/introduction.md): list and add competitors, read the market comparison and the review analysis, import from the AI report, and have a website read again. Reading needs the `competitors:read` scope and changing the list needs `competitors:write`. Ask your assistant "Which gyms nearby charge less than us for a padel court?" or "Add Ace Padel Club as a competitor".

Reading Competitors needs read access to Marketing for the gym. Adding, editing, or removing competitors needs Marketing management access.
